On August 31, graduate student Taylor Abele of Ed Miao's lab successfully defended her dissertation entitled, "Apoptotic Signaling Clears Engineered Salmonella in an Organ-Specific Manner”.
After receiving her bachelor's degree from the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC Chapel Hill and NC State, Taylor decided to pursue a PhD in Immunology at Duke University. Her dissertation centered on investigating the role of programmed cell death as an innate immune defense against intracellular bacteria such as Salmonella. Her primary manuscript was published in eLife.
For next steps, Dr. Abele is aiming for positions in industry where she can combine her immunology expertise with knowledge from her biomedical engineering undergraduate degree. She is looking for jobs beginning October 2023.
