IIB Celebrates Black History Month - William A. Hinton
William Hinton was born in 1883 to parents who had grown up enslaved in North Carolina. Hinton attended the University of Kansas and then Harvard. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School (HMS) in 1912, but as an African American, was barred from practicing surgery in Boston.
Jessica Portillo awarded “Diversity Matters Award” from Duke Microbiome Center
On January 26, 2024, Jessica Portillo was awarded the “Diversity Matters Award” from the Duke Microbiome Center (DMC). Jessica is a grad student in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and a member of Raphael Valdivia's lab.
PhD candidate Agastya Sharma awarded NIH F31 grant
Agastya Sharma's Fellowship application was awarded from the NIH after receiving a perfect score. Agastya is currently a Molecular Genetics and Microbiology grad student in the lab of Raphael Valdivia.

Melissa Harnois earns PhD in Immunology
Congratulations to Dr. Melissa Harnois, who successfully defended her dissertation entitled, "Evaluating Humoral Immune Responses Against HLA and Cytomegalovirus in Human Lung Transplantation".

On November 27th, Naren Mehta of Maria Ciofani's lab was awarded a highly prestigious F31 grant from the The National Institutes of Health, supporting 3 years of funding.

Europe Bailey Doan of the Tedder Lab successfully defended her dissertation entitled, "Patterns of Autoantibody Expression in Multiple Sclerosis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Revealed Through the Development of an Autoantigen Discovery Technology".
